Announcements

Updated 5/20/2020:

To the Yorkville Youth Athletic Association Community:

As we announced last September, our Executive Director Arlene Virga will be retiring on June 30th. Our organization, even while programs are suspended due to COVID-19 has a solid foundation and is well positioned for continued success once sports play resumes. As part of her legacy, Arlene is leaving Yorkville with a talented management team in-place to lead us through these extraordinary times. Our team, Board members, volunteers and partners are grateful for her vision, oversight and guidance.

Over the past eight months, the Board conducted a professional search for the next Executive Director. This search has been completed. Interest in this leadership role came from a wide variety of academic and athletic organization leaders across the country. Following a thorough process and review, the Board is excited to announce that Deputy Director Danny O’Gallagher has been appointed as the Interim Executive Director for YYAA, effective July 1st, 2020. In this capacity, Danny will have full responsibility for Yorkville’s day-to-day business, programming and operations.

Most of you will know Danny from his two decades at Yorkville. Less well known is that Danny’s career has been dedicated to youth and adolescent development at non-profits in New York, including roles at the Stanley M. Issacs Neighborhood Center, Children’s Aid Society and Henkels & McCoy.

Danny started at Yorkville in 1999 as a volunteer and grew flag football to be our largest recreation program. His relationships at NYC Parks help to secure our operating permits and maintain Yorkville’s status as a one-of-a kind youth sports organization in Manhattan. Danny’s innovations include teen internships and mentoring programs. Most recently, he oversaw the planning and implementation of Yorkville’s new website and mobile app.

Danny’s leadership on the fields, deep relationships within the Yorkville community and his collaboration with Arlene and the management team made him the best choice to lead the organization. Danny earned his law degree from CUNY this year, which will also be an asset to the organization.

Arlene and Danny will work closely through this immediate transition phase as we prepare outstanding programs for the next generation of Yorkville families.

Please join the Board in offering thanks to Arlene for her extraordinary accomplishments and service over the past 27 years. And congratulations to Danny - we all welcome you in your new leadership role!
