Mitchell successfully made the Xavier freshman football team and was named one of the team captains. He was selected to the first team, for both offense and defense. Xavier runs the single-wing offense, which Mitchell was the Power Back.
On defense, Mitchell played both linebacker and strong safety, depending on the opponent. Xavier finished the 2015 season with a record of 5-3 and was arguably one of their most challenging schedules to date. Mitchell was named the freshman team defensive MVP during Xavier’s sports award ceremony.
The foundation of Mitchell’s successful freshman season is directly attributable to his five seasons playing with the Yorkville Eagles where he learned the game and the hard work that is necessary to become a valued team member.
Daquan Hawkins on Mitchell:
Mitchell was a part of the Yorkville Eagles Tackle Football program from 2010 - 2014. During his five seasons here, Mitchell has matured as a player and as a person. While enduring the challenges of football, Mitchell played a major part towards the 2011 team becoming the first and only undefeated team in program history. He was very well respected by his teammates and coaches.
Now, at Xavier High School, Mitchell continues to carry on the characteristics that he has built here at Yorkville. This past season, Mitchell achieved honors by being named Freshman Defensive Player of the Year. I'm sure he will continue to carry on the principles he developed here throughout the rest of his life. I'm truly proud to have had Mitchell in our program.
