Arlene Virga Retiring in 2020

                                                                     September 26, 2019

To the Yorkville Youth Athletic Association Community:

After 27 years of leadership, the time has come for me to retire in 2020 from my position as Executive Director of the Yorkville Youth Athletic Association.  This organization, our dedicated team, and you – our players and parents - have never been far from my mind over all these years. Together, we have built Yorkville into a strong community organization, one of a kind in Manhattan, serving over 6,000 families annually with programs that include multi-sports, the arts, after school programs, clinics and summer camps. I am very proud of our many accomplishments and the lasting relationships that we have developed.

Yorkville is well positioned to continue to serve families in New York City. To help ensure this ongoing success, the Board of Directors, led by President Anthony Carbone, has commenced a formal search for my successor.  I am confident that Yorkville will continue to be well led.  In the meantime, I will continue to serve as the Executive Director so that day-to-day operations are maintained at the high level that our community expects.

The Board, our staff and I are committed to Yorkville’s mission, its norms and expectations for those we serve. Together, we will guide Yorkville through the leadership transition period and position the organization to thrive for the next generation of families. While I feel sad to leave, change is healthy and we are taking all necessary steps to celebrate and preserve Yorkville’s legacy.

Although I am excited about my retirement and moving to Austin, Texas where two of my sons and their spouses reside (one son is in Florida with his wife) I want to thank you for all of the joy that I have experienced leading Yorkville.  Almost three decades have flown by. I am grateful for the support received and for the friendships that will endure. My family and Yorkville have been my life’s work. It has all been immensely rewarding and fulfilling. Please help us continue the legacy begun over 50 years ago by my predecessors, continued by my staff and me, with the promise that our new Executive Director will carry on the traditions we have created together.

I have genuinely enjoyed my tenure and will miss all of you when my retirement day comes next year. Specifically, I will miss our staff, our workplace, the hundreds of volunteers and the people that we work with at our partner organizations including Randall’s Island, the UES Schools, Gate Hill Day Camp, Camp Pontiac and the NYC Parks Department.

Mostly, I will miss the families, past and present. I believe that we have made significant contributions to improving the lives of tens of thousands of families. I wish everyone all the best and anticipate a very bright and exciting future for Yorkville.

Sincerely,

A Message from the President of our Board

September 27, 2019

To the Yorkville Youth Athletic Association Community:

As you have likely seen or heard, Arlene Virga has made the decision to retire in 2020, bringing to an end almost three decades of commitment to the Yorkville Youth Athletic Association. Under Arlene’s direction, Yorkville has grown into the leading non-profit youth organization in Manhattan. I am exceptionally proud of her countless accomplishments and in particular, the deep and lasting relationships that she has established and nurtured.

As Arlene shared, in order to maintain exceptional leadership, the Yorkville Board has undertaken a professional search for the next Executive Director. During this phase, Arlene will continue to serve as the Executive Director so our programs will remain consistent and special.

Together, with Arlene we will guide Yorkville through the leadership transition. We are taking collective steps to celebrate Arlene’s legacy and to launch initiatives to help us remain a top-performing non-profit organization.

There is not space here to list all of Arlene’s achievements. We are especially grateful for the friendships that will endure with former and current staff, the Board and the broader Yorkville community. We are all better for her vision, hard work and oversight.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Arlene, first as a volunteer coach and for the past two decades while serving on the Board. Our staff, Board members, the hundreds of volunteers and the people that we work with at our partner organizations are grateful for her guidance and support.

We wish Arlene and her family all the best for the future.

Please watch this space for announcements recognizing Arlene’s impact.

Sincerely,

Anthony Carbone
